SaveOurSkiesPDX

Our Mission

SaveOurSkiesPDX will advocate for peaceful skies and work to reduce the negative impacts of noise pollution caused by specific low altitude military jet maneuvers near Portland International Airport. The fair and equal treatment of marginalized communities within North and Northeast Portland demands that we stand together and stop military maneuvers that shake our homes, thump our chests, compromise the quality of our lives, and move noise, vibrations, and air pollution into residential communities that previously had none.

Strategy: Educate and inform the public, stakeholders, and decisionmakers with a website, billboards, and interviews with media (print, radio, TV, Internet) whenever possible.  Explain that the Overhead Continuous Descent Approach (OCDA) is a public health issue that sits at the intersections of social equity, quality of life, private property, and noise pollution.  The OCDA is an industrial practice that is incompatible with residential neighborhoods.

Actions: Communicate with lawmakers, policymakers, neighborhood associations, community leaders, the Oregon Air National Guard (ORANG) and other stakeholders, and advocate for the enforcement of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)  policies which will ensure that a)ORANG discontinues its use of the OCDA  and b)improve the quality of life for many Portlanders.

Outreach: Military maneuvers do not belong in, on, or above civilian residential neighborhoods. Therefore, SaveOurSkiesPDX will pursue a strategy of education and advocacy.  We will educate Portlanders about these maneuvers as we strive to protect and maintain a high-quality living environment within North and Northeast Portland neighborhoods.

For too long certain areas of North and Northeast Portland have been a dumping ground and suffered the

collateral damage of Portland's industrial functions.  The communities most affected by the ORANG’s

unnecessary use of the OCDA at PDX  are diverse, predominantly lower-income, and historically

marginalized. These communities are no less deserving of a noise pollution less quality of

life. Portlanders deserve to be treated equally regardless of color, wealth, or class.

SaveOurSkiesPDX will work to make the vision of Fair Skies in Portland a reality.
